A lack of depth doesn’t get exposed until the moment you need it, just as Pittsburgh felt at outside linebacker when T.J. Watt went down in Week One.
Be it drafting J.J. Watt’s brother, T.J. Watt, in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft or selecting TE Connor Heyward, the brother of DL Cameron Heyward in the sixth round of the 2022 NFL Draft last year, Pittsburgh seemingly has an eye for family ties.
But Heyward will also be battling T.J. Watt, who sits right behind him with 77.5 sacks.
Even the Pittsburgh Steelers’ T.J. Watt seemingly traded potentially a larger total value of his contract in order to persuade the front office to break historical precedent and fully guarantee the first three years of his deal.
Former NFL DT Gerald McCoy is now an analyst with NFL Media, and on NFL Gameday Morning today, he said that Pittsburgh Steelers OLB T.J. Watt is inarguably the best defensive player in football.
Herbig will slot into the group behind T.J. Watt and Alex Highsmith.

Team captain and perennial All Pro Cameron Heyward is coming off of his second straight 10+ sack season, while 2021 Defensive Player of the Year T.J. Watt is fully healthy now after a partially torn pectoral muscle early in 2022 that derailed his season.
That’s despite having A-plus talent like QB Ben Roethlisberger, WR Antonio Brown, RB Le’Veon Bell, DL Cam Heyward, and OLB T.J. Watt.
That’s where Pittsburgh Steelers outside linebacker T.J. Watt was after tearing his pectoral muscle in the first week of the 2022 season.
The Bengals tried to give Highsmith the T.J. Watt treatment, putting a tight end outside of Brown to give him help.

T.J. Watt and Alex Highsmith are two of the best players in the NFL, and the return of Cameron Heyward solidifies the interior defensive line.
While the Steelers have two Pro Bowl-caliber starters at the position in T.J. Watt and Alex Highsmith, last season reminded us just how lacking their depth is.
